The following is an English translation of relevant information for international students, excerpted from the application procedures in Japanese. Please refer to the Application Guidelines for further information.

Important:
- - It is not possible to apply for more than one major/course during the same entrance examination period.
Requirements
Applicants must satisfy one of the following requirements or expect to satisfy one of the following requirements by March 31, 2024:
- Have graduated from university in Japan.
- Have been conferred a Bachelor's Degree by the National Institution for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation.
- Have completed a 16-year program in school education and have conferred a Bachelor's Degree in a country other than Japan.*
- Have completed a 16-year course of formal education for a foreign country through a correspondence course in Japan which is operated by a foreign school of that country.
- Have completed a university course of study in Japan for an educational institution recognized within the educational system of a foreign country and approved by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (limited to those who have completed a 16-year course of formal education in that foreign country).
- Have completed a term of study of at least 3 years at universities, etc. in a foreign country, and have been conferred a degree which corresponds to a Bachelor’s Degree.*
- Have completed a specialized course of study for a higher vocational school which is recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (limited to applicants whose term of study is at least 4 years, and to those who have fulfilled the standards established by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology).
- Be nominated by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho).
- By means of an individual screening process, satisfy Tama Art University that the applicant has academic abilities equivalent or superior to a university graduate.
Applicants with foreign citizenship must meet the above requirements and also one of the requirements below.* |

- *Candidates who have completed a 16-year course of formal education in a foreign country but have not been conferred a Bachelor’s Degree are not eligible to apply. Please refer to the individual screening process from the URL below for those who wish to apply.

Interview for Scenography Design, Drama, and Dance Major.

Screening Process
Painting, Sculpture, Ceramic, Glass & Metal Works, Design, and Scenography Design, Drama & Dance Majors
Applicants will be screened on the basis of a comprehensive assessment of submitted works, an essay, an interview, and submitted documents. Japanese Painting, and Architecture and Environmental Design Courses
will also assign the professional examination.
Art Studies Major
Applicants will be screened on the basis of a comprehensive assessment of a submitted thesis, an English examination, an essay, an interview, and submitted documents.
- - Applicants for the Painting, Sculpture, Ceramic, Glass & Metal Works, and Design Majors (excluding the graphic design course) may choose to write an essay in English.
- - The interview is held in Japanese.
Examination Schedule
* The examination may also be held on January 26 depending on the number of applicants.
Notification of Results
January 29, Monday, 2024 13:00~January 31, Wednesday, 2024
Admission Procedures
All the necessary forms and the fees should be posted by February 13, Tuesday, 2024.
School Fees
Admission
- - Painting Major, Sculpture Major, Ceramic, Glass, and Metal Works Major, Design Major (Graphic Design, Product Design, Textile Design, Architecture and Environmental Design, and Information Design), and Art Studies Major are located in Hachioji Campus (2-1723 Yarimizu, Hachioji, Tokyo).
- - Design Major (Integrated Design) and Scenography Design, Drama, and Dance Major are located in Kaminoge Campus (3-15-34 Kaminoge, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo).
- - All new students will enroll in April.
- - For international students, if the immigration authorities reject the application for “Authorization of Resident Eligibility” or “Resident Status (Overseas Education)” from February 2024, admission will be automatically canceled. Also, applicants must receive “Resident Status (Overseas Education)” by April 1, 2024.

Q1. Are there any classes conducted in English?
All classes are held in Japanese only.
International students are required to submit specified grade of EJU or JLPT taken in the specified dates.
Therefore, we strongly recommend applicants to study Japanese Language beforehand.

We do not offer summer programs nor short programs.

The duration for the Master’s Degree course is 2 years in total.
